Ninth Letter Literary Journal Cover Design
Theme: "Time Warp" | University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Project overview,
creative solution & impact
Designed the cover for Ninth Letter, a prestigious quarterly arts and literary journal, interpreting the theme "time warp" through bold visual storytelling that would captivate both literary audiences and casual browsers.
I created a dynamic starburst motif using mixed media—spray paint, precision tape work, and hand-drawn elements—to visualize temporal distortion. The composition creates a "pulsating" effect that simultaneously draws the eye inward and radiates outward, mirroring the disorienting nature of time displacement explored in the journal's content.
The cover successfully translated an abstract concept into a compelling visual that honors the publication's academic sophistication while ensuring strong shelf presence. The mixed-media approach demonstrated versatility across traditional and digital design techniques.
